Walleye Heaven!

When you think Utah, specially Vernal, you don't think walleye.  But walleye fishing is amazing here.  We have three lakes that are all less than an hour away.  Starvation is the furthest away and it holds some monster walleye.   The longest running fishing tournament in Utah is the Walleye Classic and it is held on Starvation Res.  Not only does it have trophy  walleye, but brown and rainbow trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass are also in the lake.
The second furthest  lake is Lake Boreham, aka Midview,  and it currently hold the state record for smallies at 7lb 6oz caught in 1996.   The lake holds mega walleye, I personally have seen an 8lb, 10lb, and 12lb come out this spring.  The only tricky thing about Boreham is it is on the reservation.  You need a special license to fish it, but well worth it.
The closest lake with walleye in it is Red Fleet.  This lake is unique because there is not slot limit or possession limit on walleye.  They are viewed as a pest and are believed to be illegally introduced to the lake.  The DNR is trying to encourage fisherman to catch and kill all walleye in this lake.  The thing is, not that many people fish Red Fleet for walleye, because it is such a good brown trout and bass lake.  The DNR has been gill netting the lake and have recorded 10+lb walleye.  I personally hope that the walleye stick around for ever, I think there is more fisherman out there, like me, that will embrace the walleye.
Right now is a perfect time to be on the water.  The walleye are eating everything, and there is a great chance to catch some toads!!
Check out this Monster Eye!  27 1/2"  Right at 10lbs.  The girth was over 19". Awesome catch!

Pepper Custom Baits

Uintah Angler Supply is proud to be carring new Pepper Custom Baits.  These are all American made baits.  Actually they are out of Grand Junction, Colorado.  Pepper Custom Baits have been a real hit to Lake Powell fisherman, but they work everywhere.  Pepper makes all different kinds of baits.  They make jigs, bladed jigs (kind of like chatterbaits),  plastic jig trailers, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, just to name a couple.
Open Water Assassin has a treble hook in place of the rear hook.  Also has feathers tied on the hook.  Come in a variety of colors.
We carry Pepper's Football and Flippin Jigs.  Both have super tough Gamakatsu hooks that are real sharp and hard to beat.  The skirts have a smaller silicone strand that really flares in the water, just amazing jigs!

Like the latest craze in the tour this Long Neck Roumbler is key for swiming jigs.  Made with all the same high quality as the jigs these are awesome.

One of a kind!!  All hand poured plastics, with some of the best colors.  They are covered in salt and have a very distinct smell.  Very cool!

Fishing Steinaker

I went out to Steinaker yesterday morning hoping to catch some bass before that cold snap came in.  I tied on a new Pepper Custom Jig with one of their Magic Craw trailers and started in the current by the ladders.    I got a couple of hits but kept missing them, the fish where picking it up very soft.   I really had to let the fish take it before setting the hook.  I landed two bass nothing of any real size but, fish none the less.  I started to fish the dam and started making piles of fish in 35' of water and thought I'd better try to catch one of them to find out what they were.  I set up my dropshot rod with a Gulp minnow and sunk it down to the piles of fish.  As soon as it hit the bottom I was getting little bites.   I knew I was into trout but was surprised to find what was on the other end.   I set the hook started reeling and the fish surfaced.  Bluegill, I couldn't believe how deep they were.  So I moved out to 45' of water, the fish were everywhere, and started to pull bluegills out of 45' of water.  I couldn't believe it, the bluegill were thick and full of color.  By far the prettiest bluegills ever.  None were very big but it sure was fun.

I am not use to fishing alone, but I did remember to take one picture!!
